Microsclerotherapy is a safe and effective medical treatment used to reduce the appearance of thread/ spider veins on the legs.
At Credo Aesthetics in Bristol, microsclerotherapy involves injecting a specialised sclerosing solution directly into small superficial veins. The solution irritates the vein lining, causing it to collapse and gradually fade as the body naturally reabsorbs it.
This treatment is commonly chosen by clients seeking improvement in the appearance of red, blue, or purple thread veins on the legs.
Thread /spider veins are small, visible blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin. They often look like fine red, blue, or purple lines and may form web-like patterns.
They commonly occur on:
Thighs
Calves
Ankles
Behind the knees
While usually harmless, many clients seek treatment for cosmetic reasons.
During treatment:
A very fine needle is used to inject a sclerosing agent into the targeted vein
The vein walls stick together and seal shut
Blood is naturally redirected to healthier veins
Over several weeks, the treated vein fades and becomes less visible
The body gradually breaks down and absorbs the treated vessel.
Microsclerotherapy is suitable for:
Leg thread veins
Spider veins
Small superficial reticular veins
It is not a treatment for large varicose veins or underlying venous insufficiency. If deeper vein issues are suspected, referral for vascular assessment may be recommended
Microsclerotherapy may not be suitable if you:
Are you pregnant or breastfeeding
Have a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Have known clotting disorders
Have an active skin infection in the treatment area
Have uncontrolled diabetes
Are immobile
Have severe peripheral vascular disease
Have an allergy to the sclerosing agent
Taking Blood thinners, oral contraceptives
A full medical history and assessment will be carried out prior to treatment.

Treatment Procedure
The skin is cleansed
A very fine needle is used to inject the sclerosing solution
Multiple small injections may be required, depending on the area
The procedure typically takes 30–45 minutes.
Most clients describe mild stinging or itching at the injection site. No anaesthetic is usually required
After care
Proper aftercare is essential for optimal results.
Following treatment:
Wear compression stockings as advised ( for 24 hours a day for the first 48 hours, then during the day for the following week, or two). Wearing compression stockings is essential in aiding healing and minimizing complications. Removal of the protective stockings before this required time may cause blood to flow back into the treated veins, causing blood clots and undesirable brown stains.
Walk regularly to promote circulation
Avoid high-impact exercise for 1–2 weeks
Avoid hot baths, saunas, and sun exposure for 2 weeks
Avoid long flights for at least 2 weeks
Do not apply fake tan or self-tanning products to the area
Avoid waxing the treated area for 2 weeks
If any irritation or scabbing occurs, avoid picking at the skin due to the risk of infection or scarring.
Mild bruising, redness, or temporary darkening of the vein may occur and usually resolves gradually.
Follow-up appointment
4-6 weeks after the initial treatment
Some improvement may be visible within 3–4 weeks
Full results typically develop over 8–12 weeks
Larger thread veins may take longer to fade
Results vary depending on individual circulation and vein size.
Recommended number and frequency of treatments
Most clients require:
2–4 sessions
Spaced 6–8 weeks apart
The number of treatments depends on the number and size of veins being treated.
Maintenance treatments may be needed over time, as new thread veins can develop.
Procedure time
15 minutes to 1 hour
Down time
None
Discomfort is generally mild and brief, described as a small stinging sensation during injection.
Yes, when performed by a trained medical professional following proper assessment.
Treated veins usually do not return; however, genetics, hormones, and lifestyle factors may contribute to new veins forming in the future.
There is minimal downtime, but compression stockings and activity modifications are essential. Normal activities can usually be resumed the same day, though strenuous exercise should be avoided for 24–48 hours.
Are there side effects?
Temporary redness, bruising, or mild swelling may occur. Rare side effects include pigmentation, but it usually fades over time. Allergic Reactions: Allergic reactions to the sclerosant are rare.
