Microsclerotherapy is a cosmetic procedure used to treat spider veins and thread veins (small, visible veins) on the legs
It involves injecting a sclerosant solution into the veins using a very fine needle, which causes the veins to collapse and gradually fade away
Multiple treatment sessions may be required for complete removal
It may take up to a couple months to see complete results
For the treatment of
Spider veins | Reticular veins (slightly larger than spider veins) on the legs
Not suitable in cases of
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Blood clotting disorders: Individuals with a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, or other clotting disorders should avoid this procedure
Allergy to the sclerosing agent sodium tetradecyl sulphate
Active infection or inflammation in the area to be treated
Severe systemic disease: Uncontrolled diabetes, severe heart or kidney disease, or other serious illnesses
Poor circulation in the legs
Mobility issues
Certain medications: Blood thinners or certain antibiotics, may need to be adjusted or avoided before and after the procedure
Varicose veins requiring surgery
Recent surgery: Especially on the legs or involving blood clots
Taking oral contraceptives
Obesity
Your treatment journey
Initial consultation
Clients will undergo an initial consultation before treatment. Please ensure the treatment site is washed and clean before treatment
Treatment preparation
Before treatment, the treatment area is cleaned, the sclerosing agent is then injected and a compression bandage applied. No anaesthesia is required
After care
Compression stockings
Wearing compression stockings is essential in aiding healing and minimizing complications
This helps with the absorption of the sclerosing agent
These must be worn for 24 hours a day for the first 48 hours, then during the day for the following week, or two
Removal of the protective stockings before this required time may cause blood to flow back into the treated veins, causing blood clots and undesirable brown stains
Avoid the following activities for 1 or 2 weeks following treatment
Prolonged sitting or standing
Vigorous exercise
Saunas, sunbathing (risk of hyperpigmentation), laser treatments, waxing, shaving, and swimming
Regular walking is encouraged to promote circulation
If any irritation or scabbing occurs, avoid picking at the skin due to the risk of infection or scarring
Follow up appointment
4-6 weeks after the initial treatment
Recommended number and frequency of treatments
A course of a minimum of two to four treatments is recommended to achieve the best results, allowing 4-6 weeks between treatments
Procedure time
15 minutes to 1 hour
Risk & complications
Redness and Swelling: It's normal to experience some redness and swelling at the injection sites. This usually subsides within a few days
Bruising: Bruising is also common and should fade over time. The extent of bruising can vary depending on the treated area and the number of veins injected
Itching: Mild itching may occur for a day or two after treatment
Hyperpigmentation: In rare cases, hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) can occur, but it usually fades over time
Allergic Reactions: Allergic reactions to the sclerosant are rare. Anaphylactic shock is extremely rare but remains a possibility, therefore patients with previous allergic reaction to Sodium tetradecyl sulphate should not consider this treatment
Blistering or Necrosis: In rare cases, blistering or tissue death (necrosis) may occur, especially when high concentration sclerosant was being used which may lead to scarring
